Jefferson Education Accelerator Teams Up with Formative to Bring Real-Time Feedback to Bear on Instructional Strategy
Edtech startup combines cloud-based classroom response system with a district data dashboard to translate classroom practice into data that informs school and district decision-making
WASHINGTON, DC, November 8, 2016— Jefferson Education Accelerator (JEA) today announced the selection of Formative as its latest company partner. Under the terms of the partnership, JEA will make an equity investment in the company and collaborate with Formative on quasi-experimental research to evaluate the impact of informal, formative assessment data on student learning and instructional decision-making.
“Formative has already shown great promise in terms of scale. Its platform, designed to support the practice of ‘formative teaching,’ is used by teachers in over one third of U.S. districts,” said Bart Epstein, Founding CEO of JEA. “They are the definition of a research-to-practice organization, and we are thrilled about the opportunity to help further Formative’s impact and identify best practices that can advance the field of assessment.”
The Formative platform helps educators identify and act on student needs immediately, while simultaneously tracking individual growth over time. With the ability to transform all assignments, assessments, and classroom interactions into rich student data, teachers, parents, and school administrators can track each student’s learning in real time, measure against standards, and intervene at moments of struggle.
“It [the platform] has given our teachers time back to become the architects of the learning experience," said Michele Dawson, Senior Director of Instructional Technology at Compton Unified School District of Compton, Calif.
“We founded Formative as UCLA graduate students based on research that showed tremendous academic gains from accelerating the feedback cycle,” said Craig Jones, CEO of Formative. “Jefferson Education Accelerator is leading the way on research-based improvements to edtech, and we couldn’t think of a better partner to help expand our vision.”
Uniquely focused on growth stage education companies, JEA provides expertise and investment capital to education companies with strong evidence of success, and the potential to contribute to the field through research and evaluation conducted by leading education researchers and practitioners.
