Mark Grovic has invested in high growth education companies since 1992, and has been an award winning higher-ed instructor and administrator at UMD for 13 years.
Mark founded New Markets in 2002 and serves or has served as a Board Member or Observer for Lightningcast (TWX), Think Through Math, Moodlerooms (Blackboard), Paratek (RIMM), American Honors College, Andera, ConnectEDU, Mashable, Graduation Alliance, Overture, and Questar. Mark also co-founded LifeJourney, an online educational company that allows students to test drive real life careers. Prior to New Markets, Mark was a Portfolio Manager for SEAF, a $200 million emerging market investment company, Director of Estonia-based Baltic Small Equity Fund, a Co-Founder and Principal of the Templeton Emerging Europe Fund, and a Portfolio Manager of Private Equities at the Calvert Group.
Mark is a VC in Residence and a Professor of Venture Capital and Ethics at the R.H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. Mark also helped to found and served as Board Director of the Baltimore Chapter of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, is Board Chair at Emerson Preparatory High School in Washington, D.C. and serves as Chair of the Business Advisory Board of Venture Philanthropy Partner’s Youth Connect program which includes: KIPP DC; College Summit; and Year Up. Mark is also a member of the Washington Baltimore Chapter of the Young Presidents Organization.
Mark has a BA from UC Berkeley, a JD from Georgetown, and completed graduate work in accounting and finance at George Washington and Pace Universities, and the Harvard Business School.
